When I'm out in nature early in the morning with my camera, it's slowly getting light and, with a bit of luck, there are wafts of mist hanging over the landscape or dewdrops in the meadow, there's always something magical about it for me. If I then find an exciting subject and the light plays along – it's the perfect morning!

I enjoy picking up my camera and capturing what doesn't immediately catch our eye as we pass by. For me, I think the biggest challenge is to capture the "soul" of a subject and convey why it moves me – why am I touched, amazed, charmed? Elliot Erwitt's famous words put it pefectly.

“Photography is an art of observation. (...)

It has little to do with the things you see and everything to do with the way you see them.”

I learned the “toolbox” for creative nature photography and so much more in really great workshops: Many thanks to you, Uwe Hasubek, Stefan Imig, Radomir Jakubowski, and Hermann Hirsch & Jan Lessmann from zeitweise.art, for the great tips and tricks, for the constructive feedback, for sharing your knowledge about species, and the great time with you! There, and on tours on my own, I met other wonderful nature photographers and made new friends.

I started with nature photograpy in 2018, using the Canon system with lenses from 14 to 500 mm. I love to experiment with over-, under- and multiple exposure, with longer shutter times, special lenses, and the present light. My favorite images are often the "quiet" ones that manage to capture the magic of a special moment or a landscape in soft light.

Also when I travel I focus on nature photography, simply because nature is my favorite place to be. Through photography, I not only focus more intensely on what I see on site, but also remember the beautiful moments in life more intensely. This pause for reflection has become an important balance to my work as a biologist in science communication. I am very lucky that, as part of my work, I can spend some time managing the institute's biotope project.

It often takes more than one try, not least because of the lack of light. And it is essential to know the creative techniques in nature photography that help to visualize what I want to express. It's super exciting how the boundaries of creativity are constantly shifting. There is probably hardly any motif that has ever been photographed to "completion".

The fantastic images taken by nature photographers around the world show how beautiful our planet is. But these photographs are snapshots. Many species and landscapes have already disappeared forever or will soon. These images say it all: We urgently need to invest in protecting natural areas, species and the climate – we have a lot to

lose. //
